superfood of the day
Now days everything is about healthy eating and buzz words like- "Superfoods"
There are endless lists of superfoods to choose from. So many in fact, it can get overwhelming just to choose a salad for lunch!
I want to introduce you to a tiny little seed that has so much bang for its buck you will be adding it to everything - its the Chia seed.
Yes - the same animal that grows those quirky little Chia pets!
Who doesn't love those- right?
This tiny seed was a a main staple in the Aztec diet used to build strength, so it is a very ancient superfood making its comeback. While small and virtually tasteless, it offers so many health benefits it is mind boggling. Chia seeds are high in soluble fiber, omega-3 fats, niacin, thiamine, selenium, iron and calcium just to name a few benefits. Unlike flax, these seeds can be eaten whole or ground to reap the benefits. It is a good source of non-animal protein that is very easily digestible.
Lastly, these little seeds are showing that they have the ability to lower blood sugar levels after meals as reported in "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in April 2010.
So- go forth and buy a high quality bag of these little guys and sprinkle away!
